I expect this to go straight to the bottom of the forum in no time as I know a lot you don't have a taste for anime, but anywho...
Okay, so Turner Classic Movies has been showing classic anime all month long and I just happened to catch one tonight called Only Yesterday. I've never heard of this before I saw it tonight. Regardless of animation or visual style, I found it to be one of the most beautiful films I've seen in recent memory. Right now its claimed the number two spot on my top ten list. If you get a chance to watch it, you should give it a try.
This is an excellent film, in my opinion. It was made in 2003 and stars Ben Kingsley and Jennifer Connelly. It's basically about this American woman who was wrongly evicted from her house for unpaid taxes, and an Iranian man who buys the house cheap at an auction and tries to fix so he can sell it for a high price, which will fund his son's education. Then a feud arises between the two.
From a more technical standpoint, the film is great. The shots are beautiful and unique, without seeming student-filmy (new word!). The acting is great; the story is amazing. I was hooked on it. And the last thirty or so minutes... amazing. You will not see the ending coming.
I highly recommend you seeing this film if you haven't already. It's one of the saddest films I have ever seen.
