If you download a video or audio file on this site, and you find that the video and/or audio is not appearing, please post the clip you are having trouble with, and I shall link you with the required codecs needed to be installed to play the clip.

Codecs are only very small files, that uncompress audio and video.

If you haven't already got it, then I suggest downloading DivX video codec. This is one of the most common video codecs available, and also covers a few other codecs.

Some of the files which are supposed to be played in Quicktime can be played in other players, but they come out weird (e.g. no picture). So you can try playing in Quicktime as well.

sure.

.mov .qt = Quicktime Player
.mpeg .mpg .avi .wmv .wmp = Windows Media Player
.ram .rm = Real Media Player

Of course, some of these can be mixed and matched, but generally, a casual viewer should view those files with those applications.

Third Season Video:

Voxware MetaSound
AC40V2 40.1 kbps, 44 kHz, Mono
and
Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V2

Voxware can be found here: http://www.thepenry.net/ (bottom of page as a .zip)

MS MPEG-4 VC V2 is already installed in any v9 and 10 WMP installation.

EDIT: If you try and play this file in any player other than Windows Media Player, chances are it will not play (especially in QuickTime).

I can't play the .avi files, so, I downloaded the "live in Calgary" set (the one that lasts 10 min aprox, and I can't see it, I only can hear it... and I suppose the codec is going to be useful for other .avi archives, cuz I can't see any of those.

The video codec required for your .avi issue is: DivX Decoder Filter

Please see my topic post for the details on obtaining it. Everyone needs this codec.

Well, it worked, and it wasn't difficult at all, thanks again.

You'll have to wait for ixnay for help with that. He's having computer problems and I haven't seen him for ages. frown2.gif

The weird thing is, I don't remember doing anything special to get these codecs. Maybe Acer isn't as bad as you think, ix. :P

Acer wouldn't package any codecs at all. Chances are, some Windows XP or scanner/video camera etc. software had the codec.

To install it, you'll have to wait for me to get my PC up and running again. I forget. It's either place the files in the System folder, or in the WINDOWS folder. Or maybe even in the WMP folder. :S I'll tell you when I get back up.

If you have any troubles with codecs, download a video converter called WinAVI Video Converter. it converts from ALL fromats, to ALL formats. rm to DVD, .mov to mpg... EVERYTHING to EVERYTHING.

which loses quality (a tonne - even if you don't really notice it!) and usually adds to file size. No point. Codecs keep the quality.

Consider this: mp3s are reformatted CD tracks. They lose over 1,000,000 bits of data in the conversion, which is greatly heard on any decent speakers. And mp3 is considered some of the ebst file formats for audio.

Now consider crappy file formatting programs and how much they'd lose! It's not worth it at all.

I am not supporting piratery, but I am agree with mp3 downloads.
But be a little selfish, ixnay. You would be supporting your own echonomy. If the music is online, why not take it? You would save a lot of money that you can spend in something else.

I would recommend grabbing the k-lite codec pack and VLC video player.

VLC : http://www.videolan.org
K-Lite Codec Pack : http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

I've never failed to play anything using a combination of these two and Windows Media Player Classic.

That's due to the downloads ending prematurely. You'll need (and should have) a download manager. An example of one is GetRight from Headlight Software.

All Download Managers are free (if they aren't they are probably lame).

Also note: The Download Spot is not functional ATM. There should be a message there but I can't recall. So no point trying to download from it yet.
